Rio raves about Fletcher
Rio Ferdinand feels Darren Fletcher is starting to secure the credit many at Manchester United believe he deserves. The Scotland international is one of United's unsung heroes, having been asked to operate in a number of different roles, but his recent performances have caught the eye.
The way he dominated the midfield during The Red Devils' win over Roma in the UEFA Champions League drew as much praise as the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo, while he produced an assured display at right-back in Saturday's win over Watford.
Ferdinand's departure due to a groin injury paved the way for Fletcher to move to right-back and the England international feels the Scot has a key role to play in the final weeks of the season.
"The fringe players are very important," said Ferdinand.
"Look at Darren Fletcher. He was magnificent against Roma in central midfield and then he has been asked to play at right-back and looked as though he has been there all his life.
"He is a fantastic all-round footballer, who is now starting to get the credit his footballing talent deserves.
"The manager has said all along the players who weren't necessarily playing at the start of the season are the ones who have to come to the fore. They have done that."
